Baguia Fort guided tour
You will walk around the fort with a knowledgeable guide who will share their people’s experiences during the consecutive Portuguese, Japanese and Indonesian occupations spanning over … years. You will learn about the hardship and resilience of Baguia people who were forced to build the fort from local stone, working under the threat of torture and death.
The visit will be an enriching and important activity for acknowledging the colonial history of Timor Leste from the perspective of resistance fighters who documented their oral and written stories. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions and a local cook will prepare refreshments for your enjoyment.
Tais workshop
Timor Trippers will bring you to the home of a traditional weaver, where you will learn about the process of tais making through various demonstrations. This activity is perfect for those interested in witnessing:
1. The hand spinning process for freshly picked cotton; known as ‘sula kabas’ in Makasae.
2. The various roots, leaves and barks used to dye the hand-spun cotton into bright colors, including the technique of ‘sabara’ where multicolored motifs are designed into the yarn.
3. The weaving of a ‘kola’ (men’s tais) or a ‘rabi’ (women’s tais) on a bamboo loom.
4. The finished products and the ways tais are worn and used
Your guide will translate the skills and knowledge of the traditional weaver, so make sure to ask about:
- How the weaver learned the knowledges and skills of tais making
- Why certain colors and motifs are chosen
- How tais are used for different events and for different people
- The rituals needed for respectful weaving
- And anything else you are curious about!
You will have the opportunity to purchase a souvenir at the end of the activity
Waterfalls
You will pass through green hills, overlooking rice fields, before arriving to the …., meaning little lake and big lake in Makasae. A local family will prepare your lunch as you take pictures on the rocks and swim in the clear blue water. Make sure to ask your guide to translate:
- The local history of the waterfalls and nearby sacred houses
- The cultural rules that protect this sacred area and its people
This activity is perfect for those wanting a relaxing day in nature. Visitors should be advised that the path to the waterfalls can be challenging for youth children and those with balance issues.
Archaeology
site visit A short walk with a local landowner will bring you to a cliff face decorated by the paintings of the King of … before the 1930s. Your guide will translate the knowledge of the landowner looking after the art, so make sure to ask about:
- The meaning behind the paintings and their role in the formation of the municipality
- The location’s significance during the Indonesian Occupation
- The ancestral history of a nearby cave
Ho Musan Ida farm visit
You will have the opportunity to learn about the local NGO program “Ho Mosan Ida” (One Seed), which began in 2010 to promote carbon farming. A local farmer and Ho
Mosan Ida representative will guide you through a tree nursery and you will be able to ask about:
- The program’s objectives and golden standards
- The farmers involved
- The different types of trees used for carbon farming

Easy Trekking
You will venture on a path well traveled by timorese teachers, students, farmers, and families alike. Your local guide will point out:
- Important landscapes commemorating Timorese people's resistance and strength during the Indonesian occupation
- The different trees, flowers, and roots are used for food and medicine
- The significance of birds, buffalos, horses, and monkeys that share your path
- The everyday realities of those living in small mountain villages
A local family will welcome you for a home-cooked lunch at their homestay. This trekking option is perfect for those interested in spending a day admiring the Baucau municipality from a birds-eye-view after a rewarding climb.
Easy Trekking - 2 days
We will drive you to Wakala, where you will be invited to:
- Attend a fire show
- Visit an Uma Lulik (sacred house)
- Learn about the local plants
- Witness how traditional tais weavers dye their cotton with natural ingredients
We are happy to organise other types of demonstrations and workshops upon request.
You will spend your evening eating local food prepared by the family of your night’s homestay.
Moderate Trekking - 3 days
